Tortoise Blog

My friend the tortoise has just started a new blog about films. You can read it here.

After seeing the success of Juice's blog I'm sure the tortoise will do well.

Blapper.com

I've just bought a new domain: Blapper.com.

For those who are curious as to what the name means, if you don't already know, it's probably best that you don't.

Blapper.com currently just contains a few online shops. Next I'll add some news to it. And then a bit of more interesting content on stuff on whatever I feel like rambling about.

Have also added a link to Online Sports Bettor.

Lunch Munch Blog

Am having trouble deciding what to eat for lunch and dinner. I started a blog to record what I've been eating so far. Hopefully it will get some readers who can provide me with useful suggestions.

The Side Pot

Texas Calculatem has helped me make consistent yet slow profits. But I need to take my income to the next level. Juice and Acorn are always encouraging me to stick with the NL, but the money is not coming home.

I've therefore started a little web development while playing Poker. The test site is at http://drupal.financialcharting.com/ and it's almost ready to go live. I'm probably going to host it with http://www.catalyst2.co.uk/, unless someone can think of a reason why I should host it elsewhere.

The site will initially just consist of shopping items (e.g. iskins for sale) and I will shortly add a wide selection of news. Once the scripting is done I'll try to expand it with written content. I plan on having a section on lunchtime eatery reviews. For example, I have no idea what the best sushi place in The City is. I tried a few bits from Wasabi today (London wall), usually go to the place in Leadenhall (though it can be a bit dodgy on Mondays) and eat the Pret stuff if I'm too lazy to walk far. However, any guides to any superior lunchtime eating establishments would be most appreciated by both myself and other starving city workers.

Back to the Poker, I've just sat down at Pacific. Have not caught any fish yet. Will play for an hour before watching the final two episodes of Lost at 10pm.

Arrrggghhh... Just folded TJo, on the big blind, to a raise from MP. The flop was TTJ. ARRRGGGHHH!!!!

Got lucky

Got lucky. Was sitting at Ladbrokes while waiting for J to finish his dinner, so we could move to Pacific. But the Gods threw fire onto my enemies from heaven.

Another question for Acorn:

Dealt JJ on the flop and bet the standard 4BB.

Flop is J73.

Do you bet the pot? I checked as I was worried about frightenning him off. Have a feeling this slow playing is non optimal.

A night of laughs

Last night was an amusing night in front of the TV and Poker tables.

Crazy atheist scientist, Richard Dawkins, was trying to get himself assasinated by publicly mocking Christians, Muslims and Jews. He was very brave in publicly sharing his contempt of blind faith. Not sure it Juice would agree with Dawkins as the Poker Gods have taken him far. Here are a few links to blogs that have also commented on Dawkin's show.

Confessions of a Quackbuster

Exiled from Groggs

Tears of a Clownsilly

Let's be sensible

The fish were abound at Pacific Poker, though I still have yet to optimise my play. One opponent helped me cap pre-flop with T8s. He continued playing aggressively until the river, even though he didn't even hit a pair or draw. My AA help up.

Acorn - please help me with the following!

Later on I was doing some NL just to keep Juice company. I raised 4BB to protect my QQ from the small blind. I had one caller. The flop was Q33, giving me a full house. I didn't want to scare him off. So I checked the turn. The flop was a rag so I bet half the pot and the villain raised. I called the raise and bet the pot on the river. Not sure if that was the best move as he folded. Maybe I should have re-raised the turn???

Time for a syndicate

The Euromillions jackpot is estimated to be over 100 mil. I'm trying to rustle up a quick office syndicate. My mate Ollie has done the same in his place.

Please note that if you enter the draw you'll probably lose. Here is the transcript from my Euro Millions chat with Dirty D:

The Edge [14:10]:
Do you want to enter the euro millions draw?
The Edge [14:10]:
8 people from Edge Trading so far.
Dirty D [14:10]:
how much will i pocket?
Dirty D [14:10]:
how much?
Dirty D [14:10]:
2£?
The Edge [14:11]:
£1.50 to enter. Prize is estimated at £100,000,000. Split evenly between whoever's in it.
Dirty D [14:11]:
so how much will i deposit on my bank account next week garantee?
The Edge [14:12]:
No guarantee. You give me £1.50 and probably never see it again. But it could be you!
Dirty D [14:12]:
hehe

Stats is fun!

"Stats is fun!", or so my old statistics teacher used to say.

I've been dreaming about the odds at Pacific. Last night was not profitable as

a - I didn't really hit cards
b - I allowed myself to be caught in raising wars
c - I gave too much value to my top pairs

Top pairs aren't worth much at Pacific. Two pair is the minimum required to win a hand. I've therefore compiled a few useful stats...

You have a pair on the flop using one of your two pocket cards. The odds of you hitting two pair or trips on the flop are 8.4:1.

(5 outs, 47 cards remaining, 47/5-1=8.4).

You have a pair on the flop using one of your two pocket cards. However, the board is showing a flush draw (i.e. 2 suited cards). If you do not hold a card of this suit, then 2 of the 5 cards required to improve your hand to two pair or trips could give someone else a flush. You therefore have 3 outs and the odds of hitting them are 14.7:1. Not good! The check-raises mentioned in Small Stakes Hold'Em aren't really relevant on these tables. If there are 5 players in a raised pot (most hands are raised) then there won't be many instances where a raise will block the 4:1 odds required to make a flush draw profitable. So what can be done in such circumstances? Well... Just raise away and pur your faith in the gods and variance!

Fish in the Pacific

Got totally fucked at Laddies NL again. Using the strategy below I raised 6BB with KK. Flop was AKQ. I had to raise the pot. And the raise was only 2 times the villains pot. So after I bet, he raised all in and I called. he had hit trip aces on the river. ARRRGGGHHH!

My BR is down the $300 again, so that's the end of NL for me.

Moved to Pacific $0.25/$0.50. It feels like so long since I've had a good limit session. The table was crazy, with up to 6 players participating in capped pre-flop play. I finished the session down due to a lack of strategy modifications, but don't really see how I can be a long term looser in such a environment. Pairs don't really hold. Two pairs or above are required. However, the crap software is still a let down. I'd ideally like to tighten up. See cheap flops. And play my draws. However, that requires even more patience than protecting TPTK's with chech-raises on the flop. With so many loose players hand protection is impossible.

The play of the night was hitting AKo preflop from UTG. I raise. 3 callers. I raised the flop, only to be 3-bet. On the river, I saw that the guy had 26o and no draws whatsoever. Such players are impossibly to read, but how can you lose (in the long term)?

Am trying to get J to play NL at Pacific as well as Laddies. I had a quick peek inside a $10 buyin table only to see someone go all in with 28s and no drawers. Not sure if I could handle the volatility, but I recon the "All In" strategy would be highly effective there.

Support the Nacho.

The year of the fish

Looks like I'm getting sharked by Kronsdat in the chess.

I've heard that all the pros have memorised all the opennings and correct counters. Unfortunately I'm not a pro and have seen my defense obliterated by Kronsdat's aggressive playing style.

The big 26

I hit the big 26 yesterday. Was trying to avoid it but the J and E dragged me out to a nice Thai restaurant in Balham. Not sure that there was much to celebrate. I'm 26 and am still working so it isn't as if I've achieved my life ambition yet.

Later on, of course, it was off to Laddies for some NL. Rosie_m was there, and kindly shared some of her aggressive playing style with me. She claims to not use any odds, but likes to prey on the weakness that she senses in other players. I decided to try out a few steals just to see what would happen.

Rosie's theories also led me to consider a possible aggression strategy....

Raise 4BB pre-flop on 20% of hands (providing there's no raiser). Bet the pot on the flop no matter what lands. Continue to play normally.

Would such a strategy work? Rosie said it could, and I'm tempted to invest $100 into this idea.

A few hands later, there I am with TT on the small blind. Rosie_m raised 4BB from early. There were around 3 or 4 callers. I was shitting bricks. But Phil Helmuth's "Play Poker Like the Pros" was demanding a re-raise. So what could I do but re-raise it to 8BB. Scary stuff. The flop came Jd8d5c I think. So there was an overcard, flush and straight draws. However, I had to bet out to show strength. I was a little weak and only bet half the pot, but that was already quite large compared to the usual bet size, and all but one opponent folded. The villain had re-raised me again but was all in. And I was getting over 8/1 to call. So what could I do? The guy had A3o. Bottom pair. Back door flush draw. So I almost doubled up my buy in. Back of the net.

Later on I'm in mid position and limp to the flop with 33. I hit a set on the flop, but there was also a flush draw showing. I bet twice the pot and took it down. The profit from this move was about 4BB. But I'd already committed 1BB before the flop and was 8/1 to hit my set on the flop. I'm therefore a little confused as to whether or not this was +EV play. I could have bet smaller to induce more callers, but even a pot sized bet would have (considering implied odds) given a flush draw a profitable call. I'll await some alternative opinions from all you loyal readers.

P.S. Please support J's Save Nacho Campaign.

Chess, must move back to limit

The NL continues to kill my confidence. I'm not bleeding the chips. But time is definitely bleeding away. I should try to be stronger move back to limit instead of just searching for J or Rosie_m and sitting down with them at NL.

I am now playing Kronsdat at chess! You can view the game here. Kronsdat is a teacher, so I'm a little scared of letting my readers down and making a fool of myself.

"How To Use An Odds Calculator To Win More Money At Online Poker..."

The following is some promotional content for Texas Calculatem. I've been neglecting this tool lately due to my mistaken foray into the shady world of No Limit.

Do you use a poker odds calculator?

I sure hope so. Odds calculators are a CRUCIAL part of winning money at online poker. Here are a just a few ways an odds calculator can QUICKLY and EASILY improve your game:

UNDERSTAND YOUR STARTING HAND STRENGTH...

The biggest mistake made by most card players is playing TOO MANY HANDS. For example, tell me if this thought has ever crossed your mind...

"It's worth calling the flop even though I have bad cards-- because who knows, I might catch three-of-a-kind... or two pair... or something really good!"

Every poker player has had this thought from time to time. Even the pros.

But the problem is, thinking like this will cause you to LOSE MONEY in the long run. And the reason is because of the ODDS. Even though you might make a "great hand" once in every twenty flops, those other nineteen hands will cause you to lose MORE money than you won.

But here's the thing:

The right odds calculator will show you EXACTLY how strong or weak your starting hand is... based on a PERCENTAGE and will show you the appropriate "Sklansky Starting Hand Group". What this means is you will IMMEDIATELY know how good your hand is, as soon as the cards come out.

For example, at a 10-man table pocket Aces has a hand rank of 100% and is GROUP 1. Pocket two's has a hand rank of 63.3%, which is in GROUP 7. (This is for hands to the river.)

But let's be honest... understanding how "good" those hands are is EASY. You don't need an odds calculator for that.

But let me ask you, which of THESE hands do you think has the highest "Hand Rank"?

a.) Queen-9 suited

b.) Ace-5 suited

c.) Jack-10 suited

d.) Ace-Queen offsuit

(Here's a hint... the strongest hand is NOT options "b" or "d"...)

Give up? Are you surprised that A-Q wasn't the strongest? Well, that's just ONE of the ways an odds calculator can be incredibly useful... you'll know the exact hand strength right away and can make a more educated (translation = MORE PROFITABLE) decision before the flop.

KNOW YOUR CHANCES OF HITTING AN "OUT"...

As you probably know, "outs" are cards that will help you improve your existing hand.

For example, let's say you're holding 5-6 and the flop comes out 3-4-Q. That means you need either a two or a seven to make a straight...

Since there are four two's and four seven's in the deck, you have EIGHT OUTS.

Odds calculators will show you how many outs you have at any given time... and also give you the PERCENTAGE chance you have of getting them. In addition, a REALLY good odds calculator will "break it down" by each hand...

For example, in the scenario above with the straight draw, let's say you ALSO had a spade flush draw. That means you have more than eight outs, since one more spade will help you.

Premium odds calculators will show you the exact percentage chance you have of making the straight, the exact percentage chance of making the flush, and the TOTAL percentage for the two...

This is a huge time-saver for you. Online poker is fast-paced... and it's not practical to sit there and do advanced calculations and long division while you're trying to make a decision.

PLAY YOUR POSITION MORE EFFECTIVELY...

In Texas Holdem poker, positioning is everything. You want to play MORE hands with good positioning and FEWER hands with bad positioning. It's that simple.

The odds calculator I recommend allows you to ADJUST your starting hand settings depending on where you're sitting at the table. For instance, if you're on the button (the dealer position, which is the best position to be), the program will automatically set the "Hand Rank Requirement" to 50%...

...So if you pick up a hand that has a Hand Rank LOWER than 50%, it will recommend that you fold.

But if you're UNDER THE GUN (the player to the left of the big blind, which is the worst position to be), the program will automatically set the "Hand Rank Requirement" to 85%... so the software will make "tighter" recommendations while you're in this position.

Make sense?

Now here's the real beauty of this:

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS MORE QUICKLY...

Most poker players improve their skills over YEARS of hard work, practice, and study. This is the slow and painful way.

Using an odds calculator ACCELERATES the learning process dramatically. Here's why:

As you're playing online poker, the odds calculator will automatically compute the odds, hand strength, percentage chance on outs, and so on. You'll use this information, make better decisions, and win more money.

Then here's what will happen...

In a matter of months, you'll find yourself "knowing" the odds and hand strength WITHOUT looking at the software! It will become "natural" to you... because you'll be seeing the same types of hands so frequently.

Of course, you'll still want to use the odds software for the more advanced calculations.

But you'll be AMAZED when you sit down at the poker table with your buddies, see the flop, and then blurt out:

"He has an 19% chance of making the flush on the river."

Your friends will think you're a poker genius! Because the truth is, learning the odds ISN'T about learning the MATH... it's about SEEING and PLAYING with the numbers in front of you frequently enough.

This is how the pros do it... and this is how YOU can do it with the right tool.

GET "ODDS-BASED" RECOMMENDATIONS...

Ultimately, the point is to reach a conclusion about WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IN A GIVEN SITUATION... BASED ON THE ODDS.

You and I both know that "odds" are only a PART of the game. They may be a BIG part, but they're still just a part. There's bluffing strategies, betting patterns, and many other factors that will affect your decisions...

Now let me show you the odds calculator that I use when I play online poker. It's called "Texas Calculatem". One of the great things is that it gives you "odds-based" recommendations...

In other words, it take the outs, percentages, ratios, number of players, starting hand strength, and everything else... compile it all together... and then spit out a "decision" about what you should do.

So while you're playing online poker, this program will run near the bottom of your screen and say something like, "Check" or "Fold" or "Call Unraised Only" or "Raise and Re-Raise"... and so on.

And here's another reason why I like Texas Calculatem so much:

ADJUST YOUR PLAYING STYLE AUTOMATICALLY...

Texas Calculatem lets you adjust your "style" according to your preferences and table strategy.

For instance, let's say you're playing a 10-player Sit and Go. Well, at the beginning you want to play extremely tight because you just want to SURVIVE as the other players start knocking themselves out (after all, Sit and Go's pay out for the top three finishers, so there's no need to risk many chips in the beginning).

So what I do is set the "Pre-Flop Slider" to a very tight setting.

BUT... when you DO play a hand in the early stages of a Sit and Go, you want to play it AGGRESSIVELY. Especially if it's a really good hand like a high pocket pair. Because the reality is, there are a lot of "loose manics" at the Sit and Go's who will call anything... so you want to increase your chip stack by taking advantage of them.

So in that situation, I set the "Post-Flop Slider" to a more aggressive setting.

You see, with Texas Calculatem you can adjust each of these settings without affecting the other. And you can adjust them mid-game or any time you want (I adjust mine back to more normal levels when it gets down to six players in the Sit and Go).

Of course, it's the same way with Ring Games and other tournaments. In a four player ring game I like to play lots of starting hands and aggressively "bully" my opponents... so I adjust the sliders to the looser and more aggressive settings and "Bam!"... the program adjusts its computations automatically.

AND... get this...

Texas Calculatem instantly adjusts all of the odds and recommendations based on HOW MANY PLAYERS are at the table. In ring games people are constantly getting up, sitting out, coming in, etc... and in Sit and Go's players are continuously being eliminated. All of this makes it confusing to figure out which hands to play and how to play them.

Calculatem adjusts everything AUTOMATICALLY. You don't have to input anything, either. It "detects" everything by itself.

Speaking of detection... that's something else you need to be aware of:

DON'T BUY AN ODDS CALCULATOR WITHOUT THESE FEATURES...

There are some KEY FEATURES that make an odds calculator a very effective tool. But ironically, MOST ODDS CALCULATORS don't have these features!

For instance, most odds calculators make you "manually" type in what your cards are... what the flop cards are... and so on.

This makes no sense. After all, you can do the math faster than that!

Texas Calculatem was designed in a way that requires NONE of your time or effort. It automatically "attaches" to your poker game and detects your cards and the cards on the table (from the flop, turn, and river). You just sit back and focus on the game.

Obviously Texas Calculatem doesn't read your OPPONENTS cards, though... since that information is completely secured by the casino. (That sure would make things easier, huh?)

Another great feature that Calculatem has is called "Fold Depth". This basically uses "human logic" to make the odds computations more accurate. For instance, let's say the flop came out 7-7-3 and two players folded.

Texas Calculatem "knows" that neither of those two players folded the seven. (Duh!)

The reason this is important is because it affects all of the ADVANCED calculations from that point forward. Using the "human logic", Texas Calculatem knows a more accurate percentage of WHERE the other two sevens are... as well as all the other cards in the deck.

The result is a program that is far superior and more useful than any other on the market. In fact, I've really only "scratched the surface" of all the features that Texas Calculatem has... and all the ways it can help you win more money at online poker.

Honestly, the question isn't whether or not you need an odds calculator...

The question is: How can you afford NOT to use one?

The cold hard truth is that many of your opponents WILL be using Texas Calculatem... which gives them the IMMEDIATE ADVANTAGE at the tables.

If you're only going to play poker for "play money", then I guess it's OK. But if you're playing for REAL MONEY, then you need to download Texas Calculatem to your computer TODAY. Without it, you're just another fish.

The best part is, Texas Calculatem is FREE when you setup a new account at one of the partner poker rooms...

So click this link, setup your account, and download Texas Calculatem for FREE. You'll be winning more money at online poker within the next five minutes...
