RANT: World cup???

While Juice and the Acorn enjoy the World Cup, I'm doing the most unbloke like act of avoiding it. Most of the time I've succeeded, though it did mean that I missed a trip to Platinum bar.

Anyway, aside from the actual match news, the dominant story of the World Cup over the last few days has been about the 350 school kids who got conned out of £400 (Click here for the full story). While this is obviously sad news for the kids, I really disliked Tony Blairs statement:

"I don't know what exactly can be done, but obviously for them it's terrible and it's something we need to work on to make sure they can get out there."

Yes, it's sad that kids have been conned. But it's the job of the Police to catch the criminals. It doesn't really have anything to do with the Prime Minister, and his statement only serves to reinforce the entitlement mentality that seems to pervade society. It seems to me that Mr Blair was merely pandering to public opinion. If he surely cared about poor footy fans, surely he could have said something like:

"We're going to give 350 kids who have no TV a £400 TV just so that they can watch the World Cup".

Afterall, there must be plenty of kids with no TV's. And TVs can be bought for under £400 these days.

I'm probably being cruel and heartless here. But hey, I'm a Poker player. And Poker is war!

nice of Mr Portsmouth Chairman to fund the kids being flown out and buying them tickets to a game.
Whether he does it as a PR stunt or not, still a good deed for the day.

Yes. It's nice when private individuals or companies do it. It makes people happy afterall.

I just feel it's a bit cheeky when the PM, employed by the taxpayer, uses government resources to boost his image without serving any public good.
