Got lucky

Got lucky. Was sitting at Ladbrokes while waiting for J to finish his dinner, so we could move to Pacific. But the Gods threw fire onto my enemies from heaven.

Another question for Acorn:

Dealt JJ on the flop and bet the standard 4BB.

Flop is J73.

Do you bet the pot? I checked as I was worried about frightenning him off. Have a feeling this slow playing is non optimal.

Depends on the villans. How many and how they play.At a loose aggressive table a weak bet may get someone to bet for you but your in a classic postion to check because the board doesn't look scary.

You'd be hoping an A or K comes on the turn to get someone interested because its unlikely someone else has the J and even A7 would probably fold easily to any bet

Only a villan with another set would pot commit at that point and 2 pair is also highly improbable due to your pf raise.

All player and situation dependent but I'd probably check the flop most times.

What would Juice or Rosie do?

Thanks Acorn.

Unfortunately the flop was a 7, and I bet the pot, which scared him.

Maybe I should stick to the recommendation (from many books) of betting the pot when I hit my hand. At present I only bet the pot if I have a strong but vulnerable hand that I want to protect.

I'd bet the pot, always. But people are used to me doing that, and generally, I think because of my table image, I'd hope to get at least one caller. They never call when you really want them to, though, ever.
Interestingly, I scored a set of queens last night. I bet big pre flop (maybe 5 or 6bb can't remember) with my pair, got maybe 4 callers. Queen falls on the flop - couldn't be happier. I bet the pot and got the caller I was looking for. Anyway, the hand goes on. I am tempted to go all in but resist. Then, my opponent bets me on the river. He has a q high straight which I never even saw on the board (I know, this is all my fault - I don't want you to think I think its a bad beat, I should have been more observant). What did he call my huge preflop bet with? 10 8 off. I repeat. You called me with that?!

Conventional wisdom suggest that you check the flop and let someone develop a hand but I say bet out. Free cards are deadly. Its easier to kill off chasers and take down the pot at the flop then it is at the turn or river. People will probably put you on top pair and some might call you with over cards. Either way I say bet for value and to either a)narrow the field or b) take down the pot there and then.
