Monthly stats

Up $17.81 for the month. And that includes 3 $10 buyin losses at NL, and a $10 loss at Omaha Hi. I don't know why I bother with all this. $17.81 for all this work? Bah Humbug!

Guys, do any of you want to migrate to Pacific Poker? I've heard the fishing is great there. Though the software is appalling. Please let me know what you think.

AKo from the button

I sat down. No reads. At a 10 player NL ring game.

The action is all folded to me. I have AKo. So I raise 4 SB. The BB goes all in. To call I'd have to go all in.

What should I do?

N.B. The opponent was JGildo. I don't have any Poker Office stats on him yet.

The Bloggers' Tourney at Royal Vegas Poker

The attendance was rather muted last night. To begin with, Acorn had trouble deposting into Royal Vegas. So Gary C had to loan him some chips. On top of that, our readers failed to show up, and Juice was very disappointed.

Participating poker bloggers were:

Little Acorn Man
Juice
Gary C

Tripjax couldn't make it as he was working on the layout of Gary's blog.
Another unexpected participant was a red dog called Waldo. He wouldn't provide us with any details of who he was, other than stating that he was a red dog.

Anyway, once Little Acorn got his Neteller deposit sorted we found that our readers hadn't turned up, and as a result were a little short handed. We therefore moved to a $5.00+$0.50 NL SNG and sat down with a load of other players. Gary C soon doubled up by cracking someone else's pocket Aces. Other than that, I didn't really do my journalistic duties as I was looking at contract specs on the Sydney Futures Exchange. I'm sure one of the other bloggers will give a better account of the tournament.

After that was done we decided to have another go. But Juice and myself were feeling a bit skint so we went to a $2.00+$0.50 NL SNG.

One very unusually observation I made from the Poker Office Live Tracker was the comparative looseness of the tables. I'd have expected the $2.00+$0.50 to be crazy, with the $5.00+$0.50 slightly tighter. However it was the total opposite. At the $5.00+$0.50 there were a 3 players who saw about 80% of flops. Though they got knocked out relatively quickly.

At the $2.00+$0.50 there were still 8 players when the blinds hit 80/160. And Poker Office told me that they'd all seen onlt 25% of flops! That was very worrying as I'd taken large hit forcing a short stacked opponent all in (he hit a full house!).

For this session I did not use Texas Calculatem. It's far too easy too get short stacked as the blinds increase, and you can't afford to raise a drawing hand, only to fold it on the flop. You need to either fold or go all in and hope to either scare off the opposition or that your hand holds up.

Overall it was a good night and interesting to play against the bloggers who I'm always reading about. However, I'm not sure if Royal Vegas is the way to go as the starting stacks are 1,000 (as opposed to Ladbrokes' 1,500) and this seems to add a significant luck element to the game.

Time for War!

It's 8.50pm and the UK vs US tournament is about to start at Royal Vegas. Only 3 people appear to have sat down so far. This is so tense!

Waste of time!

I don't know why I bother. Sat down with $10 at another NL table and lost it all. I went all in with 3oak Aces, queen kicker. Someone else had the king kicker.

So that's $30 I've lost in the past week due to these stupid tournies, NL games, Omaha Hi experiments and other crap. If it wasn't for the meagre amount I'd won from using Texas Calculatem at the fixed limit tables I'd be in an even worse shape.

Question about a NL hand.

10 player NL table.

I was on the button minus one and dealt KK.
1 limper.
I bet 4SB.
BB and limper call. So that's 12.5 SB in the pot.

Flop is AK3 rainbow.

The pot is checked to me so I bet 5 SB. The opposition folded.

Question... Should I have slow played? Was my bet size correct?

Our Sand Cat sponsorship program is back! My affiliate earnings from Titan Poker will go towards supporting a range of good causes. Such as sponsoring Canyon the Sand Cat or any other ideas that my readers put forward.

Texas Calculatem holds its own

I played another $2.00+$0.30 SNG at Ladbrokes with Juice. The players were pretty tight and my luck wasn't too good. For example, I hit a two pair on the flop and bet the pot to try and take it down. But Juice and another geezer called. I bet the pot again and they called. I knew something was wrong. And therefore checked the turn. It turned out that the other geezer had hit a straight on the river. Doh!

I also did a short session at a $0.15/$0.30 table. One of the players, DeepPurple, was antagonising Juice, so he left. DeepPurple was on serious tilt (said so himself) and saw 76.32% of flops, raising 21.05% of them. However, he got lucky and managed to win a little over the course of an hour. All I did was mostly follow Texas Calculatem's signals. Occasionally I had to overide it. For some reason it recommended a "check or call one small bet" on the turn when I'd raised pre-flop with JJ's but missed the flop (with Q overcard) and turn (rag). The pot odds at that point were very low so I folded. Another time I had to call down as the pot odds were 4 times my odds to win. But on the whole Texas Calculatem seem to give good advice and I was up on the session.

Not too sure if I'm looking forward to the UK Vs US SNG at Royal Vegas tomorrow. Juice is pretty depressed by the whole Poker thing and I have to admit that my own motivation is waning.

I did a link exchange with http://www.lpow.com/. It's a forum that discusses Poker. At the moment things seem a little quiet over there, but hopefully things will pick up for them.

Rivered by the Juice

All was going well.

Texas Calculatem made me $14 at a $0.25/$0.50 table and I was holding my own on a NL table.

However, the Juice was stealing blinds. I had a pair and wanted to scare him off and went all in with 66. He called with KQ and hit his Q on the river. What a fish.

I am therefore just over breakeven on the evening.

Acorn was at the table as well. At time of writing he's doing OK. I would post the actual number but Ladbrokes has just booted me off the table due to inactivity.

Texas Calculatem is waiting...

I am waiting to sit down at the "Sydney" table at Ladbrokes Poker.

Juice is already at the table and Poker Office is doing it's stuff.

The player "2005" has seen 90.7% of flops over 75 hands. And Scary033 has seem 57.1% over 139 hands.

Texas Calculatem Vs The Juice

I haven't been doing much Poker this week. The last few sessions were very demotivating. Not only am I not getting any cards, but the fluctuations in my bankroll have led me to question my skills.

For example, I still don't understand the logic of raising with 99 or TT when the chances are that someone will catch a higher pair. I'd like to argue that calling, letting more players see the flop, and hoping to hit a set on the flop, could be more profitable. Especially when it's so hard to shake off Ace chasers.

Anyway later this evening I shall be using my pure Texas Calculatem strategy probably at Ladbrokes Poker. The Juice should be there as well.

Lucky Cards from Ladbrokes Poker

I hit some lucky cards at Ladbrokes Poker today. Juice and myself decided to move to $0.50/$1.00 fixed limit due to the lack of players on the lower levels. Ladbrokes scrapped the $0.10/$0.20 tables a couple of weeks ago and that seems to have scared off a lot of the other players. It's a shame as we were just starting to know some of them, and as Acorn says, it's very friendly and nice for a bit of chat.

Anyway, my bankroll is much improved, as you can see below:

However, in the longer term, my bankroll has been moving sideways over the last few weeks. While this has partially been to a dry run of cards, I have made a few mistakes, through being too aggressive. In the future I will be tighter and more careful when I know I'm beat.

I also took a screenshot of Poker Office's Live Tracker at the end of my session:

Again, the players are fairly tight. Namiko's 85.7% SF% is only over a 7 hand sample size and therefore unrepresentative. Augustinuis is probably the loosest player at the table, but 50% SF% players can still be hard to beat if you don't hit the cards.

Looking at my stats, I've played a little tighter pre-flop than usual and increased my aggression.

Tough session

It was a tough session at Ladbrokes Poker today. The cards weren't landing, the opposition was tight, and I think Rosie_m got a little cross with my comments on her performance.

As you can see from the Poker Office Live Tracker screenshot, there were no super loose players at the table. The SF % for Piitza can be disregarded as there are only 10 hands worth of data.

Viby and 13rabbits look like they might be a little too loose. But 50% isn't quite free sushi.

I should have just left. But instead I called down a few hands in questionable circumstances.

I also lost $10 at Omaha Hi PL. I shouldn't really have sat down with so few chips. I hit a set on the flop and was pretty much forced to go all in in order to protec the hand. But another player called and hit a better full house on the river.

Omaha Hi Thoughts, and link exchange with Online Poker Guide

There isn't much of interest to report today. I did a link exchange with the Online Poker Guide (it's at the bottom of the menu on the right). If anyone else with a Poker site is interest in a link exchange please let me know.

The Hold'Em has been marginal today. Not much action and quiet tables. Rosie_m left early to go to Waitrose. Juice has had no inspiration.

With the toughness of Hold'Em I'm considering having another look at Omaha Hi. I had a good run at Pacific Poker, but the software there is terrible, and I wouldn't be surprised if the other players were so bad because of the tilt that such a poor Poker Room can induce.

However, I've read the starting hand guide here and may try a few hands this evening. Owie147 recons Omaha Hi is a great place to get rivered, but the added complexity of 4 card permutations should give other players more chances to slip up. I just have to make sure that I'm not the one slipping up!

Side business - selling permanent pages

I've set up a small website on which I'm planning to sell permanent pages. What I'm offering is to place permanent (promotional) pages on personal-finance.tv. The general idea behind this is that buyers can use the pages to promote their businesses and websites. And as the personal-finance.tv website expands, the link popularity that buyers receive from their promotional pages should increase.

In order to keep things simple I have listed the product on ebay. If you're interested please click here to view my eBay listing.

Readers of this blog can have it for a bargain price of a pound. But unfortunately I cannot do pages on Poker or other gambling related activities.

Poker Office Live Tracker Key

The following key can be used to help players understand the Live Tracker screenshots that I've posted.

HH - Number of hands played
SF % - Saw Flop %
F-T % - Went to turn when saw flop %
T-R % - Went to river when saw turn %
$ - amount won
PFR % - raise pre-flop %
AggT - Aggression factor post flop
RF % - raised on the flop %
FRTB % - folded the river to a bet
SFNB % - saw flop when not blind %

Notes

The column immediately below the heading contains data for the current session. The column immediately to the right (with blank column heading) contains total data for that player (i.e. includes past session data and current session data.

AggT is defined as (Raise % + Bet %) / (Call %). An AggT over 2 indicates aggressive play.

Here is the Player Icons Key:

Live Game of NL

I played a live £10 buy-in NL cash game with some friends and Juice last night.

The other players ranged from novice to regulars. The action was very loose pre-flop and aggressive post-flop. For example, The Fridge and Miss Tough frequently raised and called large bets with nothing. This made them hard to read so I just stayed out of their way if I didn't have anything.

I didn't really hit anything good in the whole evening, but used positional raises to steal a few hands and won a few smaller hands. Ended up with a £7 profit for the night.

Here are some player notes that I used them to add some profiles to my forum. You can view the new poker player profiles by clicking the links below:

Despite it's usefulness, Poker Office doesn't appear to be that popular with my readers, and as a result I doubt I can get a free copy for you. However, if you ever need any stats in the future just let me know.

I managed a good free card play last night....

Sturmvogel needs some anger management

I was playing a $2.00+$0.30 10 player SNG at Ladbrokes Poker. It was pretty tough with lots of good players. I therefore felt compelled to compliment the high level of play with lots of wp's and nh's. However, Sturmvogel took exception to this after a particularly crafty maneuver outsmarted him, and told me in no uncertain terms to shut the fuck up. I feel that he needs to calm down a little.

Moving onto my Poker performance, the fixed limit was dire. I tightenned up and chased less. But just didn't hit any of my drawers. I'm beginning to think that poker is like a broken pencil - pointless.

I came second in the tournament mentioned above (angry Sturmvogel came first), and that made up for the fixed limit debacle.

I still haven't managed to meet up with Little Acorn Man yet. Probably won't be able to next week. Tomorrow I'm meeting up with an fat ginger irishman, on Wednesday I have drinks with the worlds top trader under 30 (according to Traders' Magazine), Thursday evening I'll be screwing anyone stupid enough to trade me in the US equities markets, and Friday will be an early night.

If you want some easy prety at Ladbrokes Poker, try looking for the player with the alias "Jeinsen". He sees about 80% of flops. Chases his aces. And is very vulnerable to tilt.

Butroz Stats

My kind and loyal reader, Butroz, requested some stats from this evening's session.

Butroz - here they are!

Unfortunately I'm down tonight. Just couldn't hit anything. Am still having trouble with marginal situations.

For example, I raise from mid position with JJ. There were two 6's on the flop. But I bet out to see what happened. All but one called. The turn was a ten so I checked. So did everyone else. On the river I bet out and was raised by the dealer who had a 6 (and thus his hand was three of a kind 6's). This was rather frustrating. I knew someone had a 6. But from what I've been reading, betting out on the flop was the right thing to do.

Anyway, here's my bankroll.

Juice will be overtaking me soon. I guess it may be time to retire and allow my protege to flourish without me to hold him back.

Poker Office User Guide

Free Poker Office

What is Poker Office?

Poker Office is a piece of software that tracks online Poker players' behaviour and assists users with useful odds and probabilities in real time. The Poker Office website states:

"PokerOffice is the most sophisticated tool on the market for Online Texas Hold'em Poker. PokerOffice allows you to track all of your opponents actions as well as your own game, while you are playing, without any need for hand histories or user input. It stores all of the collected data and brings you summarized statistical reports, spreadsheets and graphs of your own and your opponents play. In addition it comes with a Live Advisor Window that displays real time opponent modeling of the players you are currently facing, real time probabilities of future hands, hand rankings, Pot Odds and live graphs and statistics."

What Poker Office can do to help your Poker game

Poker Office can be used to

- track your own historical poker actions
- track opponents historical actions
- present you with useful odds, probabilities and statistics in real time

Tracking your own Poker performance

One of the best uses of Poker Office is to assess how you play statistically and to identify leaks in your game. Taken on a basic level Poker Office can tell you the percentage of flops that you've seen. This figure, over the long term, should ideally be between 20% and 30%. If you are seeing well over 30% of flops then you are probably too loose and playing too many hands. Similarly, if you are seeing under 20% of flops then you might be too tight.

Another statistic that I like is the aggression factor (Agg Factor). Most Poker books recommend tight-aggressive play. Aggression is useful for protecting your hands and maximising pots. A Total Post Flop Agg factor of 2 and up is fairly high (above 3 is really aggressive). If your aggression factor is too low you may wish increase it. In order to increase your aggression I'd recommend reading Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big With Expert Play by Ed Miller, David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth. It has excellent advice on when to bet, raise or check-raise complete with sound explanations.

Tracking the actions of other poker players

The main statistic that I use for monitoring other players' performance is the Swap Flop%. This figure tells you how often players see the flop. In general, it is believed that seeing over 30% of flops is too loose, and that money from profitable poker playing comes from players who are too loose. I therefore use Poker Office to help me look for tables with loose players. This can be done through looking at the overall Saw Flop% for a table, but this averaged statistic can be unreliable, especially when players come and go frequently. Therefore, what I prefer to do is identify individual players that I'd like to sit down with. If a player has a Saw Flop% of over 50%, for a sample of 50 hands or more, then there's a good chance that they're playing too loosely. I try to choose tables with 3 or more such players.

The Aggression factor can also affect profitability. If there are lots fo pre-flop raises then I'll be folding more hands pre-flop. And bets/raises on the other streets will induce more folds than passive tables. I therefore try to choose tables that Poker Office has identified as being passive rather than aggressive.

Realtime odds, probabilities and statistics

The statistics overlay is very useful. For example, the overlayed pot odds are can help players who struggle with mental arithematic and are useful when deciding whether or not to call/fold.

The odds of hitting various hands can be displayed, the the total playable odds of improving can give a reasonable estimate of your chances if you think you're behind.

However, be aware that the "Total Playable" statistic can be misleading as it does not take into account the chances that one of your outs will improve someone elses hand as well. For example, if you have an open ended straight draw and there are two suited cards on the board, then two of the cards that give you your straight could give another player a flush. Poker Office will count those two cards as outs, but the wise player will not give them a full weighting.

Poker Office usage tips

Before I start playing I like to get Poker Office going first. If I'm planning a long session I might start up Poker Office 30 minutes before hand to gather statistics on new players (you can watch up to 8 tables simultaneously). After the 30 minutes I will choose tables based on the above criteria (i.e. loose passive opponents).

I always have the Live Tracker window open and sort the players by Saw Flop%. When there are 3 or more players seeing over 50% of flops then I know that I'm likely to win. If the table tightens up I tighten up as well until it loosens up. If the table remains for tight for too long then I may leave.

Sit N Go... Balance $316.43

I've done 3 $2.00+$0.30 5 player sit and gos. And one $2.00+$0.30 10 player sit and go this weekend.

The 5 player tables payout to the top two players. The 10 player tables payout the top 3.

Not sure which is better for me. The 5 player tables obviously take less time, but I find that their brevity make it harder to read the opposition.

The 10 player table had more length and 3 players went all in the first 5 hands, thus adding dead money to the pot.

Anyway, I think these tables are a good place to work my NL skills. At only $2.30 a go it's hardly going to hurt my bankroll and I look forward to sitting down with Little Acorn Man to see how a more experienced player works his skills.

Progress Report at Juice's Request

The chart doesn't look too bad, but times feel very tough. A couple of losing sessions and I'm feeling very depressed.

The problem is that I'm not willing to step up the stakes until I've earned it. But that will take along time. If I deposit my earned income then 1) I'll feel too nervous and 2) it increases my risk profile. I have a bad family history of gamblig and need to make sure that I can't lose anything significant from the game. I will not become one of those stupid kids who blow their family savings.

Practising the NL

I decided to try a 5 player NL SNG as preparation for some NL with Little Acorn Man. My skills are severely lacking...

I'm UTG and dealt AJo. I raise 4BB.

UTG+1 calls. So does the small blind.

The flop is 542 rainbow. I've totally missed. The big blind checks. I decide to try bluffing it out and bet the pot. Both players call.

The turn is a ten. I've totally missed again

Big blind checks.

What should I do?

Anyway, I can 2nd due to exceptionally lame check and all-in plays. Won $0.70. I'm such a big winner!

Not a good session...

Despite applying the new strategy of betting/checking (i.e. not calling) my pre-flop raises on the flop, I'm still down today.

I believe that the main problem may have been with me trying to conduct sports arbitrage while being on the phone while playing Poker.

I guess I just need to keep on grinding away...

Answer to Jeff's Questions about Texas Calculatem and Poker Office

Jeff,

Thanks for posting. It's nice to see how other people are getting along with the tools that I use.

In answer to your Questions...

1 - I keep the Live Tracker window open as I like to watch the stats that it gathers about my opponents (the overlay doesn't completely work at Ladbrokes Poker). I usually sort it by the Saw Flop %. That allows me to count the loose players (Saw Flop % > 50%, but I only pay attention to this after 30 or so hands).

2 - I must apologise but the latest "Odds Calculator" post is just some copy and pasted promotional material from Texas Calculatem. I should have labelled it as such but was in a rush. I'll fix that later.

Regarding my religion, no, I don't follow it that closely anymore. Texas Calculatem is a good guideline for pre-flop play, especially if you're two tabling. The Odds To Win is a good estimate of your pot equity, and useful if you're wondering about whether to call or fold.

However, for trickier scenarios, I've been experimenting with ideas from Ed Miller's Small Stakes Hold'Em. Consider the case where you have AdKh. The flop is Ah7c3c. You have top pair and are probably ahead. But there's a flush draw possibility. Anyone drawing to the flush would have 4:1 odds to hit it on the turn. Betting might not protect the hand, but a check-raise might. Or maybe you'd check and then bet (or check-raise) the turn. Stuff like that isn't handled my Texas Calculatem.

3 - Regarding table selection I've been very indisciplined lately as I usually just play with my mate Juice for a laugh and joke around with the other players. Little Acorn Man has wrote a good post about how he select tables. But essentially, you're right, in that it's both hard and tedious to wait for the perfect table.

What I'll sometimes do, 30 minutes before I plan to start, is to open up 4 poker tables and get Poker Office going. That allows it to get 30 minutes of stats before I sit down.

Also, I've recently found that the 60% saw flop figure, as estimated by the poker rooms (and even Poker Office) can be misleading. I have therefore been counting the number of loose players at the table. If someone has been seeing over 50% of flops over 30 hands or more, then there's a good chance that they're playing too loose. Tables with 3 or more loose players are good for fishing. Do not be intimidated if Poker Office tells you they've made lots of money. Loose players have more volatile bankrolls so the biggest winners in individual sessions are usually those who play too loosely.

When tables get too tight I might stick around for a couple of orbits to see if it loosens up. And if too many players leave I might just sit out to save me paying the blinds. When in tight/passive games it is sometimes worth stealing blinds to make a blind or two. For example, if you are the small blind and everyone folds to you, you may try to raise (irrespective of your hole cards) with the aim of inducing the big blind to fold. Be careful if they fight back though!

Anyway, I hope you have success with these great tools, and would be most interested to see how you get along with them.

The Edge!

How to play TT ctd...

I've had a bit of feedback about the TT hand that I discussed in the last post.

Little Acorn Man, with his NL outlook, recommends a bet to see where I am. For example, a raise will tell me that I'm probably behind.

Mad MadMat wrote at Poker-Strategy.org:

In Limit - pot is offering 10:1 at this point, and since we raised preflop I think I'd be inclined to bet out again with a continuation bet, if no ones holding an Ace you should take the pot there on a drawless board. you only need them all to fold one time in 10 here for this bet to be profitable.

Both arguments are good. So I guess betting is, in general atleast, the right move.

Looking further back, I'm now questioning whether or not TT is a good hand to raise when 4 players have already limped.

Texas Calculatem recommended a raise.

Small Stakes Hold'Em recommends a raise.

Poker Stove estimates that I have around 36% pot equity against random hands. But assuming the limpers have random hands is a poor assumption.

Please lend me your feedback if you have any opinions on this matter.

Swings and Roundabouts. Reader feedback requested.

It's been swings and roundabouts this weekend. I'm marginally down overall. My strategy has been pretty consistent with what it's been over the last few weeks. But I feel I've been punished with incorrect play in marginal situations where the statistical/psychological arguments don't agree.

So I guess I'm going to have to throw out the argument to you guys and see what you have to say...

Suppose I'm in the big blind with ThTs. 4 players call including the small blind. I raise. And they all call. That's 10 small blinds in the pot.

The flop is As8c4d.

So I have a pair above mid pair. And there are no straight or flush possibilities. The small blind checks. What should I do?

How To Use An Odds Calculator To Win More Money At Online Poker...

Do you use a poker odds calculator?

I sure hope so. Odds calculators are a CRUCIAL part of winning money at online poker. Here are a just a few ways an odds calculator can QUICKLY and EASILY improve your game:

UNDERSTAND YOUR STARTING HAND STRENGTH...

The biggest mistake made by most card players is playing TOO MANY HANDS. For example, tell me if this thought has ever crossed your mind...

"It's worth calling the flop even though I have bad cards-- because who knows, I might catch three-of-a-kind... or two pair... or something really good!"

Every poker player has had this thought from time to time. Even the pros.

But the problem is, thinking like this will cause you to LOSE MONEY in the long run. And the reason is because of the ODDS. Even though you might make a "great hand" once in every twenty flops, those other nineteen hands will cause you to lose MORE money than you won.

But here's the thing:

The right odds calculator will show you EXACTLY how strong or weak your starting hand is... based on a PERCENTAGE and will show you the appropriate "Sklansky Starting Hand Group". What this means is you will IMMEDIATELY know how good your hand is, as soon as the cards come out.

For example, at a 10-man table pocket Aces has a hand rank of 100% and is GROUP 1. Pocket two's has a hand rank of 63.3%, which is in GROUP 7. (This is for hands to the river.)

But let's be honest... understanding how "good" those hands are is EASY. You don't need an odds calculator for that.

But let me ask you, which of THESE hands do you think has the highest "Hand Rank"?

a.) Queen-9 suited
b.) Ace-5 suited
c.) Jack-10 suited
d.) Ace-Queen offsuit

(Here's a hint... the strongest hand is NOT options "b" or "d"...)

Give up? Are you surprised that A-Q wasn't the strongest? Well, that's just ONE of the ways an odds calculator can be incredibly useful... you'll know the exact hand strength right away and can make a more educated (translation = MORE PROFITABLE) decision before the flop.

KNOW YOUR CHANCES OF HITTING AN "OUT"...

As you probably know, "outs" are cards that will help you improve your existing hand.

For example, let's say you're holding 5-6 and the flop comes out 3-4-Q. That means you need either a two or a seven to make a straight...

Since there are four two's and four seven's in the deck, you have EIGHT OUTS.

Odds calculators will show you how many outs you have at any given time... and also give you the PERCENTAGE chance you have of getting them. In addition, a REALLY good odds calculator will "break it down" by each hand...

For example, in the scenario above with the straight draw, let's say you ALSO had a spade flush draw. That means you have more than eight outs, since one more spade will help you.

Premium odds calculators will show you the exact percentage chance you have of making the straight, the exact percentage chance of making the flush, and the TOTAL percentage for the two...

This is a huge time-saver for you. Online poker is fast-paced... and it's not practical to sit there and do advanced calculations and long division while you're trying to make a decision.

PLAY YOUR POSITION MORE EFFECTIVELY...

In Texas Holdem poker, positioning is everything. You want to play MORE hands with good positioning and FEWER hands with bad positioning. It's that simple.

The odds calculator I recommend allows you to ADJUST your starting hand settings depending on where you're sitting at the table. For instance, if you're on the button (the dealer position, which is the best position to be), the program will automatically set the "Hand Rank Requirement" to 50%...

...So if you pick up a hand that has a Hand Rank LOWER than 50%, it will recommend that you fold.

But if you're UNDER THE GUN (the player to the left of the big blind, which is the worst position to be), the program will automatically set the "Hand Rank Requirement" to 85%... so the software will make "tighter" recommendations while you're in this position.

Make sense?

Now here's the real beauty of this:

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS MORE QUICKLY...

Most poker players improve their skills over YEARS of hard work, practice, and study. This is the slow and painful way.

Using an odds calculator ACCELERATES the learning process dramatically. Here's why:

As you're playing online poker, the odds calculator will automatically compute the odds, hand strength, percentage chance on outs, and so on. You'll use this information, make better decisions, and win more money.

Then here's what will happen...

In a matter of months, you'll find yourself "knowing" the odds and hand strength WITHOUT looking at the software! It will become "natural" to you... because you'll be seeing the same types of hands so frequently.

Of course, you'll still want to use the odds software for the more advanced calculations.

But you'll be AMAZED when you sit down at the poker table with your buddies, see the flop, and then blurt out:

"He has an 19% chance of making the flush on the river."

Your friends will think you're a poker genius! Because the truth is, learning the odds ISN'T about learning the MATH... it's about SEEING and PLAYING with the numbers in front of you frequently enough.

This is how the pros do it... and this is how YOU can do it with the right tool.

GET "ODDS-BASED" RECOMMENDATIONS...

Ultimately, the point is to reach a conclusion about WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IN A GIVEN SITUATION... BASED ON THE ODDS.

You and I both know that "odds" are only a PART of the game. They may be a BIG part, but they're still just a part. There's bluffing strategies, betting patterns, and many other factors that will affect your decisions...

Now let me show you the odds calculator that I use when I play online poker. It's called "Texas Calculatem". One of the great things is that it gives you "odds-based" recommendations...

In other words, it take the outs, percentages, ratios, number of players, starting hand strength, and everything else... compile it all together... and then spit out a "decision" about what you should do.

So while you're playing online poker, this program will run near the bottom of your screen and say something like, "Check" or "Fold" or "Call Unraised Only" or "Raise and Re-Raise"... and so on.

And here's another reason why I like Texas Calculatem so much:

ADJUST YOUR PLAYING STYLE AUTOMATICALLY...

Texas Calculatem lets you adjust your "style" according to your preferences and table strategy.

For instance, let's say you're playing a 10-player Sit and Go. Well, at the beginning you want to play extremely tight because you just want to SURVIVE as the other players start knocking themselves out (after all, Sit and Go's pay out for the top three finishers, so there's no need to risk many chips in the beginning).

So what I do is set the "Pre-Flop Slider" to a very tight setting.

BUT... when you DO play a hand in the early stages of a Sit and Go, you want to play it AGGRESSIVELY. Especially if it's a really good hand like a high pocket pair. Because the reality is, there are a lot of "loose manics" at the Sit and Go's who will call anything... so you want to increase your chip stack by taking advantage of them.

So in that situation, I set the "Post-Flop Slider" to a more aggressive setting.

You see, with Texas Calculatem you can adjust each of these settings without affecting the other. And you can adjust them mid-game or any time you want (I adjust mine back to more normal levels when it gets down to six players in the Sit and Go).

Of course, it's the same way with Ring Games and other tournaments. In a four player ring game I like to play lots of starting hands and aggressively "bully" my opponents... so I adjust the sliders to the looser and more aggressive settings and "Bam!"... the program adjusts its computations automatically.

AND... get this...

Texas Calculatem instantly adjusts all of the odds and recommendations based on HOW MANY PLAYERS are at the table. In ring games people are constantly getting up, sitting out, coming in, etc... and in Sit and Go's players are continuously being eliminated. All of this makes it confusing to figure out which hands to play and how to play them.

Calculatem adjusts everything AUTOMATICALLY. You don't have to input anything, either. It "detects" everything by itself.

Speaking of detection... that's something else you need to be aware of:

DON'T BUY AN ODDS CALCULATOR WITHOUT THESE FEATURES...

There are some KEY FEATURES that make an odds calculator a very effective tool. But ironically, MOST ODDS CALCULATORS don't have these features!

For instance, most odds calculators make you "manually" type in what your cards are... what the flop cards are... and so on.

This makes no sense. After all, you can do the math faster than that!

Texas Calculatem was designed in a way that requires NONE of your time or effort. It automatically "attaches" to your poker game and detects your cards and the cards on the table (from the flop, turn, and river). You just sit back and focus on the game.

Obviously Texas Calculatem doesn't read your OPPONENTS cards, though... since that information is completely secured by the casino. (That sure would make things easier, huh?)

Another great feature that Calculatem has is called "Fold Depth". This basically uses "human logic" to make the odds computations more accurate. For instance, let's say the flop came out 7-7-3 and two players folded.

Texas Calculatem "knows" that neither of those two players folded the seven. (Duh!)

The reason this is important is because it affects all of the ADVANCED calculations from that point forward. Using the "human logic", Texas Calculatem knows a more accurate percentage of WHERE the other two sevens are... as well as all the other cards in the deck.

The result is a program that is far superior and more useful than any other on the market. In fact, I've really only "scratched the surface" of all the features that Texas Calculatem has... and all the ways it can help you win more money at online poker.

Honestly, the question isn't whether or not you need an odds calculator...

The question is: How can you afford NOT to use one?

The cold hard truth is that many of your opponents WILL be using Texas Calculatem... which gives them the IMMEDIATE ADVANTAGE at the tables.

If you're only going to play poker for "play money", then I guess it's OK. But if you're playing for REAL MONEY, then you need to download Texas Calculatem to your computer TODAY. Without it, you're just another fish.

The best part is, Texas Calculatem is FREE when you setup a new account at one of the partner poker rooms...

So click this link, setup your account, and download Texas Calculatem for FREE. You'll be winning more money at online poker within the next five minutes...

7Sultans risk free money

Here's a non-Poker related offer to help our bankrolls get rolling...

7Sultans are having a limited testing period to assess player behaviour, during which new players get 15 minutes to play casino games with a free $500 of notional casino chips. Players get to keep what they win but no deposit is required.

In order to claim this offer players need to use this link and the access code "Test777".

There don't appear to be any game restrictions. But 7Sultans have not specified when this testing period is ending so it'll be a good idea to do it ASAP. I'm going to do it this weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to pull a few hundred dollars out of it, which I'll use to take a punt at some higher limit Poker tables.

My Poker Office and Texas Calculatem setup

This picture shows how I have Texas Calculatem and Poker Office setup for helping me win at online Poker.

The top window is Poker Office. It watches the tables and tells me how the other players have acted historically. It also overlays statistics on the table. For example - in the displayed hand the current pot odds to call are free as I can check.

Texas Calculatem is the window in the middle. In the example it's telling me that I have the nuts hand and a 100% chance of winning. Back of the net!

TWAT

Giraffen has a SF% of 61.8%.

Got lucky and started making snide comments to other players.

I need to go join Juice at another table or I'd make a good go of sending that piranha back into the pits of hell.

Tighter than a...

I just two-tabled at $0.25/$0.50 across Ladbrokes and Royal Vegas.

The session started at Royal Vegas. The lobby statistics showed a saw flop percentage of 55%, but when I sat down I quickly found that it was tighter than Juice's ****. There were many steals and frequently only 3 players per flop. However, I did not steal myself as I had no cards to back myself up. I noticed that some players raised more than I'd conventionally expect and they won some money. However, I did not get sucked into the Piranha game, and stuck to my simple tight strategy. It eventually paid the bills but I'm not sure of this hand...

I was in late position with KQo. It was folded to me so I raised. The only caller was the big blind.

The flop was QQ8. I had previously forced the big blind into a fold, from betting on the flop when we were heads up and I wanted to suck him in. So I tried to be tricky and checked. He checked as well.

The turn was a king. Giving me a full house. I did not want to miss another bet and therefore bet. The big blind folded.

I therefore got a minimal return from my full house.

So... Should I have called pre-flop? I could have got more money from more players if I'd done that. Should I have been straightforward and bet the flop (instead of checking)? SSHE recommends straightforward play, rather than tricky, so according to that I guess I should have bet the flop.

It's getting late so I'll await some replies from my readers.

The session at Ladbrokes was uninspirational. Non of the usual crowd were there and players kept on leaving. I eventually left when only 5 players were remaining.

Keeping it real

I'm continuing to stick to a tight strategy. I feel that I need to improve my player reading. Sometimes I can buy pots by betting but at other times I just get called down.

I'm folding a lot more pots, and that is reducing my losses.

Billydee was another Piranha. He raised about half of the flops he played, quite often with pure garbage. Fortunately my patience worked on him and I ended up winning the session.

Poker Office

I took a break from Poker for a few days and went to Newquay for some surfing. It was good fun but cold.

I was going to upgrade my Poker Office database from Microsoft Access to mySQL, but then found that it uses a funny Java database called Mckoi SQL Database. Not too sure if it's any good or not but decided to leave it. However, my computer has severe performance issues if I track more than 2 tables at a time.

Other than that, the Poker is continuing to come along today. I'm finding yet more fish using Poker Office and just watching the opposition. A player by the name of Redul saw well over 90% of flops and would cap pre-flop with questionable hands such as A7o.
