Odds Manipulation

I had a good session at Ladbrokes Poker, which made up for yesterday's debacles.

One mistake I made, though, was folding a 12 BB pot when there was a 4 straight on the board. I had 2 pair. The other two players had shown weakness, and so, despite being last to act, I folded a strong two pair. Doh!

Early on in the session the table was short handed. I therefore did some pot steals. This isn't really possible with many players as a) someone will get odds to call and b) lots of loose players suggest that someone will call. However, if there are few players, and the pot's only 2 or 3 blinds, if you bet from the button then the opponents will get poor odds. But that isn't always very safe if you're very weak as betting into a 3 blind pot will give the opposition 4/1 odds. So if that's the case it can be better to wait until the turn. If the card looks like a blank, and the pot has 3 small blinds, then a bet will face the opposition with a 2.5/1 pot odds call.

Hi,
As usual i read your comments with interest. Regarding stealing the blinds, i am not certain that the table being shorthanded is relevent. May i be so bold as to suggest that its the number of people left in which is relevent rather than the number who are sitting down.
My thought is that the best time to steal the blinds is when there is just you (on the button) and the two blinds left in. They then know that even if they call the pot is not likely to amount to much and so they might as well let their blinds go and move on to the next hand.
I agree that this works best (if at all) with experienced players rather than fish, simply becasue (particularly if you have established your reputation as a good player) they are more likely to muck a reasonable hand. I would also suggest that it works better in high limit, no limit or tournament games where you can make a worthwhile raise.
I am also not sure about leaving it till after the flop if you only have a weak hand. There is too much risk that the other players will have improved their hand on the flop (or the turn) and the lack of a bet on the flop, particularly from the big blind, might simply be slow playing a low two pair (for example).
Overall i think the best time to steal is if theres only dealer and the two blinds and to do it pre-flop.

Can i jst caveat the above by pointing put that i had never played poker of any sort until three months ago so if i am talking rubbish thats my excuse.

Have you noticed that I made the mistake of posting my own picture on my blog?

Magic,

Thanks for leaving the comment. I enjoy reading any genuine comments that are left here.

Yes, you are right when you say that the number of players is relevant. I was unclear in my explanation, but in my defense, situations with so few players are more likely in short handed games.

Also, in short handed games, callers are less likely to have strong hands.

Regarding waiting till after the flop... What I meant, was betting from the button on the turn. If the 4th card has landed and the players have checked to you then that's a sign of weakness. And if you add the double sized turn bet into the equation, then that increases your odds of success.

Good luck at the tables,

The Edge.
